Another Perfect History/Culture Day in Lynchburg

Where to Eat...

Breakfast

The perfect day would have to start off with the perfect country breakfast from a small diner simply called "Country Cookin'." Nothing beats a home cooked country meal like your grandmother used to make when you were growing up and that's exactly what you get from here. Make sure to bring cash though, as this amazing, feels-like-home place does not accept credit cards.

Lunch

Harbor Inn Seafood has the best lunch deal ($6.95) in town. Besides having one of the cheapest lunches you can get, the seafood is some of the best around. The restaurant also offers a salad bar which is always fresh and green. Make sure to bring your appetite as you will leave full and probably with leftovers for the next day.

Dinner

After spending an afternoon on the year-round slopes of the all new, year round ski resort, there is no better way to enjoy an evening than to go to the best eatery in town. The Waterstone, located downtown on the riverfront, offers a wide variety of fire-roasted, brick oven pizzas as well as many other Italian delicacies. Not only does this place have the best food in town, but located on the second floor of the restaurant is a micro brewery where 5 different beers are brewed fresh year round. A must visit for anyone visiting the central Virginia area.

What to Do...

Morning

The morning would be filled with history and beauty. During the cool of the morning would be the perfect time to make the 20 minute drive to Peaks of Otter, located just west of town. The park offers a wide variety of short hikes, all with amazing views of the Appalachian foothills. Located just 10 minutes south of that is the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford. This amazing memorial is dedicated to all of those who were tragically killed storming the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

Afternoon

Even in the hot summer days of central Virginia, there is still always a cool place where you can go skiing year round. The new Snowflex resort, located on Liberty Mountain, has a new "faux snow" technology that allows it to be used year round no matter how hot or cold the weatherman says it is. This brand new attraction to Lynchburg offers a one of a kind experience that is the first of its kind in the eastern United States.

Evening

The evening would be again spent basking in the great history of the central Virginia area. The terrace memorial is single most interesting monument that I have ever visited. The 139 step memorial has landings (terraces) that commemorate those from the city who fought and died in every war that the US has been involved in since the Civil War. There are many statues throughout the memorial and there is a museum located at the top of the steps.

Late Night

What better way to end a great day than to take some time and relax in your favorite coffee shop with some friends. Even if you are alone The Muse Coffee Co. located in the Wyndhurst neighborhood, offers a relaxing place to chill and make new connections. The coffee is out of this world and the service is even better. Many times you can even find local musicians playing laid back music to keep the evening relaxed and fun.

Comments

Lynchburg may not be widely renowned for its tourism, but the small city has so much to offer in that realm. The location is phenomenal as the weather is usually mild and comfortable during the spring and fall. The historical town of Appomattox is also only 15 minutes to the east. Should you come to visit Lynchburg, I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
